A fatal disease, mesothelioma cases in the US have been rising. In New York, the threat of mesothelioma has indeed become a very real after 9/11.
Mesothelioma is a form of malignant cancer which attacks the lining of the lungs known as the pleura or the lining of abdominal cavity known as the peritoneum. Mainly caused by the inhalation of asbestos particles from various asbestos related products such as insulation, fire retardant material, construction products, mesothelioma is still a relatively uncommon cancer with about 2,000 new cases being diagnosed in the US each year. Occurring more often among men, the risk of this form of cancer increases with age. It must be noted that mesothelioma can occur among men and women at any age.
Commercially mined and used since the late 1800s, asbestos usage greatly increased during World War II. Millions of American workers, especially those who worked in the heating and construction industries, shipyards, asbestos mines and mills were exposed to asbestos dust. Even though widespread use of asbestos in the US ended in the 1970's thanks to stricter workplace regulations implemented by the government, but the damage was already done.
The risk of mesothelioma increases with longer exposure time or exposure to hazardous levels of asbestos. Some individuals with only brief exposure, however, have also developed this disease. Additionally, there is evidence that family members of asbestos workers are at an elevated risk of developing mesothelioma as a result of exposure to asbestos dust brought home on the clothing or hair of the workers.
Mesothelioma in New York
In the state of New York, there have been a number of mesothelioma cases. New York has had many plants, shipyards, factories, powerhouses and construction sites where asbestos was heavily used and such sites still exist. Many New Yorkers have worked in foundries, sandblasting, steel, grinding, construction, brick, welding, oil and gas, asbestos mining and milling, and stone industries.
Unfortunately the tragedy of 9/11 has only increased New Yorkers’ chances of contracting mesothelioma. The World Trade Center was built prior to 1975 when the use of asbestos in construction was not regulated. When the Towers collapsed, they released tons of concrete, glass, jet fuel and construction materials to form a toxic cloud in the vicinity. Thousands of brave rescue workers, gallant fireman, police and security personnel now have a much higher chance of contracting this deadly disease. Since mesothelioma symptoms take between 30 and 50 years after exposure to appear, it is unknown how many New Yorkers actually have this disease.
According to experts, the toxic debris of the fallen buildings traveled as far as a mile from Ground Zero. Much lighter toxic particles traveled as far as Pennsylvania making the common man’s exposure to these toxins very likely. The debris of WTC also emitted toxic fumes, particles and pollutants months later that can have serious repercussions for those who lived and worked nearby or were part of the salvage operations in the area. The particles inhaled included metals, acids, asbestos and other carcinogens.
