A state with numerous shipyards, construction sites and factories, Hawaii was found to have a large number of Mesothelioma cases. According to a survey, 137 people have died from asbestos related diseases in this beautiful island of United States since 1979. Even though the number of fatalities is not so high, yet the people working in such places need to be aware of this deadly disease.
One very important thing you need to know about Mesothelioma is that it is a 100% preventable disease. As it is only caused by the unlimited exposure to asbestos particles and fiber, it can be completely avoided. People who work in asbestos related industries are at most risk for Mesothelioma e.g. those working in welding, construction, steel, grinding, brick, sandblasting, oil and gas, asbestos mining and milling, and stone industries all vulnerable to Mesothelioma e.g. However, if they wear protective clothing and masks when working, they can avoid this disease. It was finally in 1980’s that the state banned use of asbestos in commercial products.
Mesothelioma attacks the pleura or the protective lining covering the lungs or peritoneum, the protective lining of the stomach. However, the symptoms of this disease can take up to 20-30 years or more to appear. Thus, after a long latency period, the chances of survival for patients are very thin due to the spread of the disease in the body.
Mesothelioma not only kills people who work in the asbestos contaminated environment. It is also a danger for their loved ones as it can be carried through clothing, shoes and hair of the workers. Mesothelioma is responsible for taking more than tow and a half thousand lives each year.
