According to the statistics provided by the Environmental Working Group, there have been only 75 deaths resulting from asbestos diseases in Vermont from 1979 to 2001. Among those 75, 40-50 people suffered from Mesothelioma. Even though Mesothelioma is not very rampant among people living in Vermont, it is important for them to take caution and protect themselves from asbestos exposure.

There is an urgent need for increased awareness of Mesothelioma as this disease is on its way to become an international menace. As no cure has been worked out for it, the only way to survive is to avoid getting it. Those who develop this cancer can die within a year after the symptoms appear. Asbestos exposure is the only cause for this cancer. Avoiding asbestos can guarantee 100% safety from Mesothelioma. Wearing protective gear and masks can protect those working in asbestos related industry from this cancer.

People working in shipyard, construction, and insulation, asbestos mines and mills, car industry, and factories are at risk of developing Mesothelioma. Although, commercial use of asbestos has been banned since late 1980’s, yet, asbestos products are still available. Thus, Mesothelioma is a very grave to human life. Due to this reason, many environmental agencies and human rights organizations are demanding complete ban of asbestos.

The two main types of Mesothelioma which can affect a person are pleural and peritoneal. Pleural Mesothelioma attacks the lining of the lungs which peritoneal Mesothelioma attacks the stomach lining. Families and loved ones of the Mesothelioma affected people are also at risk of developing it by inhaling the asbestos particles and fiber from the clothes, shoes and hair of people working where asbestos is handled.

Mesothelioma in Vermont

Vermont is a sensitive area and people here should be careful as two shipments of vermiculite containing asbestos were shipped from Libby, Montana to Morrisville in Vermont during 1948 and 1993. Although, these shipments are not so huge, yet they pose a danger to the lives of people living in Vermont. Especially people working at such sites should be extra careful and wear protective clothing when handling asbestos.

It is also important to note that Vermont is home to major asbestos mining company known as Lowell Asbestos Mine which caused extensive asbestos exposure in nearby areas. Another important piece of information is that Vermont has large amounts of naturally occurring asbestos. The extent of the naturally occurring asbestos yet to be determined, yet it is as harmful to human life as ever. People need to be aware of such dangers in their surrounding and take preventive measures as there is no cure for this deadly cancer.
