Among all the United States, Ohio is the state with the highest death rate resulting from Mesothelioma as there are a large number of asbestos industries in Ohio. As seen on the government death certificates, around 1,607 people were killed by this vicious disease during 1979 to 2001 in Ohio. Out of this, it is estimated that around 1,000 people were victims of Mesothelioma.
People living in Ohio need to be on their guard and aware of the Mesothelioma risk as this cancer has no cure. It does not respond well to treatment and most of the people diagnosed with disease die within 16 to 18 months after the symptoms appear. Even though surgery, chemotherapy and radiation are some modes of treatment, yet they do not give 100% results.
There are two common types of Mesothelioma, pleural and peritoneal Mesothelioma. Pleural Mesothelioma affects the lining of the lungs known as the pleura while peritoneal Mesothelioma affects the peritoneum or the lining of the abdominal cavity. The only known cause of Mesothelioma is asbestos exposure. If your or your loved ones have worked in an asbestos-based industry, it is important to have regular checkups because Mesothelioma has a latency period of up to 50 years. Symptoms can appear after this long latency period.

In all the US, Ohio was the first state which required medical references before the patient could file a law suit against the negligent employer in September 2004. It requires the medical evidence which lead to Mesothelioma so that the courts were prompted to act fast and give first priority to people suffering from this disease.
