New Jersey Mesothelioma Attorney, Facts and Figures

New Jersey has one of the highest rates of mesothelioma incidence in the US because there were and still are many asbestos based industries in the state. Camden and Somerset are the two counties in New Jersey which have the highest mesothelioma deaths rates.

If you worked in an asbestos-based industry prior to the enforcement of OSHA regulations regarding the use of asbestos in the workplace, you may have a higher risk of developing mesothelioma. This rare, deadly and extremely aggressive cancer has no cure and the only viable treatment is to catch it in its early stages. Surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy are a person’s only defense against this cancer.

Occurring most commonly in the pleura (lining of the lungs) or peritoneum (lining of the stomach), mesothelioma is only caused by asbestos exposure. Since New Jersey has many plants, shipyards, factories, powerhouses and construction sites where asbestos was and is used, workers here have a greater risk of developing mesothelioma. Foundry, welding, asbestos mining and milling and stone industry workers are also at risk of developing this cancer.

An important point to keep in mind is that this disease has a latency period of 30 to 50 years. Men are more prone to developing this cancer than are women mainly because men are usually employed at these workplaces.

Mesothelioma in New Jersey

At least 2,775 people have been killed by asbestos related diseases in New Jersey since 1979. Of this total, 1,045 to 1,775 people have died from mesothelioma alone. One of the main reasons for this high mesothelioma death rate is because many asbestos based industries are located in New Jersey. Additionally, around 2,597 shipments or 338,134 tons of contaminated vermiculite went from Libby, Montana to 7 locations in New Jersey between 1948 and 1993. Trenton, Edgewater, Newark and Camden were the places to receive these shipments.

An important point to be aware of is that the federal government has listed 2 plants in New Jersey on its list of contaminated sites. The Zonolite Company/W.R. Grace plant on 35 Industrial Way in Trenton and the Celotex plant on 1 River Road in Edgewater are currently under investigation. Below are the figures for the number of deaths, mortality rate (per million population), and years of potential life lost (YPLL) in New Jersey in the year 1999, among residents aged 15 years and older.

A facility that used to process vermiculite from Libby in huge amounts was the Zonolite/W.R. Grace plant located in Hamilton Township, Mercer County, New Jersey. This plant was the only vermiculite exfoliation plant in the state and many New Jersey residents worked and lived in the area nearby. It is vital for people who have worked there to have themselves checked out for mesothelioma as they have a higher risk of developing this cancer.

A large number of mesothelioma cases in New Jersey have also come from Manville in Somerset County because the largest asbestos manufacturing plant in North America was located there. According to the New Jersey State Cancer Registry, around 143 mesothelioma cases were reported in Somerset County alone from 1979 to 1990; 636 males and 96 females in Manville. This rate is about 25 times higher than the average state rates.
