The state of Maryland ranks 16th for mesothelioma mortality according to the CDC. While these figures show that Maryland has a small but significant number of mesothelioma deaths, they do not paint the whole picture. The reality is that approximately 1,074 people have died from asbestos in the state since 1979 and the number of deaths from mesothelioma range between 453 to 747 people according to government statistics.
A reason for Maryland having such high rates is that around 773 shipments or 69,385 tons of contaminated vermiculite went from Libby, Montana to 6 locations in Maryland between 1948 and 1993. These locations were Beltsville, Baltimore and Lutherville Timonium. Of the total shipments of vermiculite, roughly 67,743 tons went to Beltsville. The federal government has listed the W.R. Grace/Zonolite Company Site in Beltsville on its priority list of contaminated sites.
